Background Image Handling

What changes have been made to the background handling?

It is now very easy to apply custom background styles to your page. Effects such as single images that fill the browser, header and footer areas that span the browser width, linear and graduated backgrounds as well as others can be apply with little effort.

Why is the background white by default in my new website document?

We have changed the appearance of the default blank templates, so that they have a white backdrop or pasteboard area. This is more WYSIWYG, because the published website has a white backdrop. In fact, by default, the empty web page templates have no page color, so that if you set the pasteboard color (e.g. drag n drop a color from the color line onto the pasteboard) it sets the entire website background, the page and the 'website backdrop' area. If you want to set the page to be a different color to the backdrop, simply drop a color onto the page area (or right click on it and select Page background -> Edit page color option).

Are there any pre-designed website backgrounds I can use?

Yes, a collection of website backgrounds that make use of the new background handling features can be found in the Designs Gallery in a folder called 'Website Backgrounds'

How can I apply a linear or graduated background?

  • Apply a background colour to the page, or pasteboard area as normal.
  • Then unlock the layer that you applied the colour to in the Page & Layer Gallery
  • Select the colour-filled area, then select the Fill Tool and click and drag to apply a linear fill.
  • Select either end of the fill handle and then right click a colour on the Colour Line to apply a colour to that end of the fill handle.

Make sure that you lock the background layer again in the Page & Layer Gallery once you have done made the changes and select the MouseOff layer to make that the active layer again

Has how images get applied as a background changed?

Depending on the size of the image and the size of the page will depend on what fill the background image gets applied as.

  • If the image is wider than the page width that you are applying it to then the image will be applied as a single tile.
  • If the width of the image is less than the width of the page then the image will be applied as a retaining fill

How do I apply a a full image background?

  • Import the large image you wish to use
  • Delete the image from the page
  • Open the Bitmap Gallery, scroll down to find the image and select it
  • Click the Background button at the top of the Bitmap Gallery and select 'Set pasteboard background'
    • If the image is wider than the page width that you are applying it to then the image will be applied as a single tile.
    • If the width of the image is less than the width of the page then the image will be applied as a retaining fill
  • Right click on the pasteboard area and select Pasteboard Background > Fill browser window.

How do I change the background image fill type?

Depending on the size of the image and the size of the page will depend on what fill the background image gets applied as. See Has how images get applied as a background changed? for more information.

If for example you import a small image as the background image, but have it a single tile fill and not repeating follow these steps;

  • Unlock the background layer that you applied the image to in the Page & Layer Gallery
  • Select the image
  • Click the Fill Tool
  • From the 2nd drop down menu at the top change the selection from 'Repeating Fill' to 'Single Fill'
  • While still in the Fill Tool you can then edit the fill as you would on any other object by dragging the fill handles to change it's fill size and rotation and re-position the fill.

If you wanted to make a large fill that gets imported as a single tile, a reprating tile then follow the same steps above and change 'Single Fill' to 'Repeating Fill'.

Make sure that you lock the background layer again in the Page & Layer Gallery once you have done made the changes and select the MouseOff layer to make that the active layer again

How can I apply a colour contone to a background image?

  • Import the large image you wish to use
  • Delete the image from the page
  • Open the Bitmap Gallery, scroll down to find the image and select it
  • Click the Background button at the top of the Bitmap Gallery and select 'Set pasteboard background'
  • Right click on the pasteboard area and select Pasteboard Background > Edit pasteboard colour
